Social Determinants of Health

Collection of resources that demonstrate and explain the concept of Social Determinants of Health.

About This Guide

"Social determinants of health refer to a specific group of social and economic factors within the broader determinants of health. These relate to an individual's place in society, such as income, education or employment. Experiences of discrimination, racism and historical trauma are important social determinants of health for certain groups such as Indigenous Peoples, LGBTQ and Black Canadians." [Government of Canada]

Awareness and understanding of social determinants of health is crucial to ensuring equitable child welfare practice. This guide links to videos, journal articles, and government sources that are intended to support child welfare practitioners in achieving equitable outcomes in their work with young people and families.
